Dairy and Poultry Waste Processing

Dairy Cattle Manure Applications

To valorize livestock manure, the present study investigated the production of biochar from cow dung (CD) by microwave pyrolysis. The pore properties and chemical characteristics of CD and CD-based biochar products were found to correlate with improved soil amendment properties. For instance, biochar derived from cattle manure (CM) has been used as an adsorbent to remove various pollutants such as pesticides, antibiotics, and heavy metals.

Poultry Manure Processing

Livestock production is among the most rapidly growing sectors of the agricultural economy, driven primarily by growing demand for animal protein, but also posing significant waste disposal issues and environmental impacts. Moreover, opportunities exist for utilising animal waste at the farm level for heat and power generation (thermal conversion), which can contribute to economic sustainability and also provide a bio-fertiliser for soil amendment.

Environmental and Economic Advantages

Greenhouse Gas Reduction

With its substantial CO2eq emissions, the agricultural sector is a significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter. Animal manure alone contributes 16% of the total agricultural emissions.  This article addresses the life cycle optimization (LCO) of the poultry litter supply chain considering pyrolysis technologies that aim to sustainably convert poultry waste into biofuel and biochar.

Waste Management Benefits

Sustainable: The use of chicken manure as a biomass is sustainable as it helps to reduce waste and provides a value-added use for a byproduct of the poultry industry.  However, converting animal manure into bioenergy through pyrolysis is a clean, safe, and promising technique to reduce the amount of waste and produce valuable products.

Pathogen and Contaminant Control

Through pyrolysis, the heavy metals of animal manures are fixated in the biochar, thereby both soil contamination via leaching and heavy metal uptake by crops are minimized. Pyrolysis biochar is potentially use in soil remediation for agronomic and environmental co-benefits.  Many thermochemical conversion processes, including electricity, biofuel, biogas, and biochar, present great performance in reducing pathogens and waste, degrading antibiotics, and stabilizing heavy metals.

Soil Amendment Applications

Studies have shown that when applied as a soil amendment, biochar can sequester carbon, improve soil fertility and reduce nitrate leaching – among other crop production and environmental benefits.

Additional Benefits

Animal Feed Applications

Biochar provides many advantages for animal nutrition when utilized as an ingredient in a blended product, including improved animal feed digestibility, reduced enteric methane production, and increased livestock growth performances for different animal species.

Low Energy Processing

Low Energy Input: The production of chicken manure as an adsorbent requires low energy input and minimal processing compared to other waste treatment methods.

The pyrolysis of dairy and poultry waste represents a comprehensive solution to livestock waste management challenges, converting environmental liabilities into valuable products while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving nutrient management, and creating economic opportunities for farmers through waste-to-energy conversion and premium biochar production.

Key Product from Pyrolysis of
Animal Waste

Biochar is mainly used in soils to increase soil aeration, reduce soil emissions of greenhouse gases, reduce nutrient leaching, reduce soil acidity, and potentially increase the water content of coarse soils. Biochar application may increase soil fertility and agricultural productivity. Recent studies on the char produced via pyrolysis have demonstrated that it is a valuable additive with multiple applications ranging from soil and water amendment, improving agricultural yield, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and in support/catalysts, sustainable chemistry, and carbon sequestration.
